Since its inception in 2004, Contrasto Armonico has been aiming to inspire and engage a large and diverse audience through highly artistic early music performances, educational projects, lectures, and workshops.
We believe in the power of music, a universal language which brings people together.
We believe that historically informed performance practice has a very strong impact on the understanding of music from the past.
Performing on instruments that the composers would have known in their time, and applying historical techniques - not just how to move our bows or what finger patterns to use, but considering principles of harmony, structure, and rhetoric - allows us to show our audience how we see this vibrant music with a different light.
To promote the performance, study, and appreciation of historically informed early music throughout Victoria, Vancouver Island, and beyond, by organising and presenting concerts, festivals, workshops, and other cultural events.
Contrasto Armonico strives to encourage awareness and appreciation of ‘historically informed’ music performance. The society does this by organising and presenting concerts by nationally and internationally prominent artists in its local area as well as helping farther communities expand their access to music of exceptional quality.
The society also aims to expand access to music through its programs and workshops which give opportunities for amateurs and professionals alike, to explore new styles of musical language and expression.
The society is committed to welcoming people from all communities, without restriction or prejudice.
